Guides

Our ultimate goal is to provide you with a safe and exciting ski / snow boarding holiday experience. your guides are dedicated and certified professionals, chosen to balance your desires and abilities with the mountain environment.

Each guide has undergone extensive training and acquired certification by the ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) or VIAGM (International Mountain Guides Association). Our operations follow industry standards recognized by Helicat Canada and the Canadian Avalanche Association.

John (Buff) Buffery

John hangs his hat in Nelson, BC although it is unlikely you will ever catch him there as any free time is spent on his new project at an undisclosed location, “down the lake”.

Buff has enjoyed a twenty year career guiding people in the outdoor and mountain environment.  His credits include membership in the Canadian Avalanche Association (instructor level), Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, BC River Raft Guide Examiner and Mountain Safety Consultant to the Movie Industry.  For more, see www.safetywrangler.com

Although an avid skier, Buff prefers the snowboard and the thrill of the ride.  Other interests include Tai Chi, climbing, cycling, paragliding and writing music.

Stian Hagen

Stian Hagen grew up in Norway in a family where skiing was the religion. He started skiing the day he could walk and in his early years, competed in x-country skiing, ski jumping and telemark skiing. After finishing school, Stian packed his bags and headed for Chamonix to try his skills on the biggest peaks in Europe.

Since then he has occupied his time with steep descents such as East face of the Matterhorn, Couturier Couloire in the Alps and numerous expeditions around the world. Stian has also competed on the world freeskiing tour where he has had some top 3 finishes. After quitting the competition circuit, Stian has dedicated his time to filming with some of the major ski movie producers and has finished his UIAGM / IFMGA guiding course.

His list of first decents are long and he looks forward to many more in the unexplored terrain within the KIHS tenure.
